JOANNE WHALLEY (Liz)
Joanne Whalley began her career on television at the age of 10, twice appearing in the popular long running series CORONATION STREET, and then as a regular series character in both the EMMERDALE FARM and A KIND OF LOVING.
At the age of 18, Whalley, later to be chosen by People magazine as one of the 50 Most Beautiful People (1991), appeared at the Royal Court Theatre in England, earning kudos, and an Olivier nomination. She also made her feature film screen debut as one of the groupies chasing after rock star Bob Geldof in the musical PINK FLOYD: THE WALL (1982).
She went on to star opposite Miranda Richardson and Rupert Everett in Mike Newell’s 50s period drama DANCE WITH A STRANGER, with Ray McAnally in Peter Smith’s satirical comedy NO SURRENDER, and, again for Mike Newell, opposite Anthony Hopkins in the social drama THE GOOD FATHER. Other film credits include Ron Howard’s fantasy epic WILLOW, the thrillers TO KILL A PRIEST and KILL ME AGAIN, but it was her star-calibre performance as the infamous Christine Keeler, a central figure in the Profumo affair, in Mike Newell’s SCANDAL, which made Joanne Whalley a household name.
On television, Whalley is well known for her outstanding performances as the beautiful Nurse Mills in the TV miniseries THE SINGING DETECTIVE, (1986), and for her role as Emma Craven in the EDGE OF DARKNESS TV miniseries (1986), for which she received a BAFTA Award Nomination for Best Actress. Other television credits include her elegant appearance as Beatrice in A TV DANTE: THE INERNO CANTOS I-VIII (1989), her portrayal of Scarlett O’Hara in a TV adaptation of the GONE WITH THE WIND sequel (1994), and her convincing portrait of Jackie Bouvier Kennedy Onassis in the TV miniseries (2000) of the same name. In 2005 she appeared as Mary I of England in THE VIRGIN QUEEN, a BBC serial about Queen Elizabeth I, and in 2006 she appeared in LIFE LINE, a BBC drama. Most recently she starred in the mini-series FLOOD, with Robert Carlyle, amongst others.
Other feature film credits include NAVY SEALS, THE BIG MAN, the mystery thriller SHATTERED, STORYVILLE, THE SECRET RAPTURE, MOTHER'S BOYS, A GOOD MAN IN AFRICA, TRIAL BY JURY, as Lorelei in the comedy THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO LITTLE, opposite Bill Murray, and A TEXAS FUNERAL (1999).
